W is for Wash--dirty to clean!

Wash...clothes, dishes, the house, pigs, us!  It's fun to wash--though probably more fun to get dirty!

Books

Five Little Monkeys with Nothing to Do  by: Eileen Christelow

Ten Dirty Pigs/Ten Clean Pigs: An upside-down, turn-around bathtime counting book  by: Carol Roth; illustrated by Pamela Paparone

Songs/Rhymes/Fingerplays/Flannel Board

Five Little Piggies

Five little piggies rolled in the mud.
Oh, my goodness! They need a scrub!
The farmer took one piggy out
"Oink, oink, oink!" the pig did shout!

Continue down to zero

No little piggies rolled in the mud
They look so nice after their scrub
The farmer turned his back...and then
Those piggies rolled in the mud again!

Wiggle Your Toes
(sung to: Row, row, row your boat)

Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle your toes
Wiggle them up and down
Wiggle them every which way
As you turn around.

Additional verses:
Wave your arms
Stomp your feet
Clap your hands

Rub-a-dub-dub

Rub-a-dub-dub
Three men in a tub
And who do you think they be?
The butcher, the baker, the candlestick maker
And all of them going to sea!

V is for Vegetables...and other garden things!

I can't wait for spring!!  What better way to prepare than a storytime about gardens and the vegetables we can grow there (and eat!)

Books

Rainbow Stew  by Cathryn Falwell

Muncha! Muncha! Muncha!  by Candace Fleming; illustrated by G. Brian Karas

Songs/Rhymes/Fingerplays

My Garden
(sung to: Skip to my Lou)

Sun in the sky, shine, shine, shine
Sun in the sky, shine, shine, shine,
Sun in the sky, shine, shine, shine
Help me with my garden!

Rain from the clouds, drip, drip, drip
Rain from the clouds, drip, drip, drip
Rain from the clouds, drip, drip, drip
Help me with my garden!

Seeds in the dirt, grow, grow, grow
Seeds in the dirt, grow, grow, grow
Seeds in the dirt, grow, grow, grow
Help me with my garden!

The Soup is Boiling Up!
(sung to: The Farmer in the Dell)

The soup is boiling up,
The soup is boiling up,
Stir slow around we go
The soup is boiling up.

First we'll add the... (whatever vegetable you'd like!)

Next we'll add the...

Last we'll add the...

I have both plastic and paper vegetables for the children to add to the big, black cauldron to make our vegetable soup.  Both days I had to use the paper veggie cut-outs because we had so many children!  But they enjoyed "making" vegetable soup with the plastic veggies at the end of storytime!

Little Jack Horner

Little Jack Horner
Sat in a corner
Eating his Christmas pie
He put in his thumb
And pulled out a plum
And said, "What a good boy am I!"

What other food did Jack pull out of his pie?  Answers included: pancake, tomato, banana, blueberry!

Enrichment Activities

U is for Upside Down...and other silliness!

What's more fun than being upside down and silly?!

Books

Batty by Susan Dyer
This is a cute story and it is a lot of fun with some of the pictures and words upside down...but sometimes I think the wrong pictures are upside down.  So when I read it aloud to the children I showed those pictures both directions.

Silly Sally by Audrey Wood

Songs/Rhymes/Fingerplays

Bats Are Sleeping
(Tune: Are You Sleeping)
Bats are sleeping, bats are sleeping
Upside down, upside down
Waiting for the night to come
Waiting for the night to come
Then they fly, all around!

Parachute Fun
This was not really a song, more of an activity.  We put a teddy bear in the center of the parachute and tired to flip him high into the air so he could turn upside down.  The kids had a lot of fun with this activity!

Little Boy Blue

Little Boy Blue come blow your horn
The sheep's in the meadow, the cow's in the corn
Where is the boy who looks after the sheep?
He's under a haystack, fast asleep.

What other animal was in the corn?  Answers included: horse, alligator, dog, giraffe

Enrichment Activities

Cats, hats, eggs, and (clap)
Cats, hats, eggs, and (clap)
We love Dr. Seuss!

Continue to take away one picture from the back each verse until you just have clapping.

Have You Ever Seen a Cat in a Hat?
(sung to: If you're happy and you know it)

Have you ever seen a cat in a hat? (clap, clap)
