Baby Storytime--June 5

This week I highlighted books with photographs instead of illustrations and talked about how much babies love to look at faces!  This was also our first session with new songs/rhymes/bounces for the summer--so those always start off a little rocky.  Next year I think I will try to do the add one new one and take one away approach...then I will have done it both ways and see what works best for the babies, parents, and me.

Summer Reading School Visits!

Over the last 2 weeks I've visited three schools and talked with about 1,000 students about our upcoming Summer Reading Program at the library!  I love visiting the schools and seeing the kids excited about reading and programs we have at the library!

The first school Kelsey and I visited we spoke to the kids in the cafeteria during their lunch.  That was interesting...  Kelsey did just a very brief (less than 5 minutes) overview of the summer reading program and then we went around the room and talked to the kids at their tables and answered questions.

The second school we had three, 20 minute mini-assemblies--each with several classrooms/grade levels at each assembly.  Kelsey read "The Book With No Pictures" to the younger grades and I did a Superhero Mad Lib (see below) with the older grades.

My last school I did on my own--it took me two afternoons to see each grade level individually.  I also had 30 minutes each!  So I knew I needed a little "gimmick" to keep the kids engaged.  I made
a selection board.  I invited kids to come up and choose a card with a topic or question on it.  I would then talk about that specific part of the summer reading program or ask questions/give information about the library.

Here is a sample of the cards:

Late Night @ the Library
Thursday Programs (some cards with specific programs)
Tween Programs
How much does a library card cost?
How many books can you check out at a time?
What happens if you return your books late? (Promote Read Away Fines)
Win a color changing pencil
Read Aloud (for younger grades)
Mad Lib (for older grades)

The cards made it nice so I could tailor each talking point with the age group AND it kept me on track about what I had/hadn't talked about with each group.

Yes, he will!

He looks straight ahead
Then he pops out of sight!

Here are Baby's Eyes
Here are baby's eyes so bright,
Always sparkling, full of light.
Here is baby's little nose,
Here's his/her mouth so like a rose.
Here are teeth all shining bright;
Be careful, baby, where you bite!

Here are two pink, little ears,
Oh, how many things he/she hears.
Here are checks so soft and sweet,
Look like they were made to eat!
The forehead's where wee face begins;
Here's the end--a dimpled chin!

As I Went Walking to Town
(rhythmical bounce baby--with puppets)

As I went walking to town
Oh, it was a sunshiny day!
As I went walking to town one day,
I met a cow along the way!
And what do you think that cow did say?
Mooo!

Continue bounce with other animals (I use duck, cat, and pig)

Popcorn
Pop, pop, pop (bounce)
You put the corn in the pot
Pop, pop, pop
You shake it till it's hot (gently "shake")

Lift and lid and what have you got?
Pop, pop, pop
Popcorn! (raise baby in air)

Peek-a-Boo (with scarves)

I hug you, hug you everywhere!

I tickle you here, I tickle you there

Bye, bye, bye
Bye, bye, bye
Take your little hand and wave bye, bye, bye
Give a little wave!

Counting Storytime

I've finally learned!  Since I don't have a consistent group that comes to storytime I never know if I will have more preschool aged or more toddler aged children.  It has been pretty frustrating trying to plan.  So this week I had a Toddler Storytime and a Preschool Storytime ready to go for our Counting theme--so I was prepared for whatever group came!  I had 2 preschool children and 4 toddlers, so although I felt like I could have done more with the older kids, focusing on the younger kept them all engaged.

Spring! Outreach Storytime

I requested we purchase Stuck in the Mud for my mud storytime--however, it is out of print.  I then asked to Inter Library Loan it--well it finally came in...after my mud storytime, of course!  Since I had it I wanted to be sure to use it, as it is one of favorite books.  So mix it in with other spring books for a preschool visit today!

Books

There was an old lady who swallowed a frog
by Lucille Colandro; illustrated by Jared Lee

Muncha! Muncha! Muncha!
by Candace Fleming; illustrated by G. Brian Karas

I can walk on two feet, on two feet, on two feet
I can walk on two feet, all day long.

Run

Hop (on one foot)

Five Little Piggies
(Flannel Board)

5 little piggies rolled in the mud
Oh, my goodness! They need a scrub!
The farmer took one piggy out
"Oink! Oink! Oink!" that pig did shout!

Continue counting down through one.

No little piggies rolled in the mud
They look so clean after their scrub.
The farmer turned his back...and then...
5 little piggies rolled in the mud again!

Plant a Garden! Storytime

So excited to explore gardening with my storytime children!  I had a wide age range, and I kind of lost the younger kids on Jo MacDonald, but the older kids had fun doing all the action, and of course, singing E-I-E-I-O.

Books

My Garden
by Kevin Henkes

Jo MacDonald Had a Garden
by Mary Quattlebaum; illustrated by Laura J. Bryant

Songs/Rhymes/Flannel Board

Out in the Garden
(tune: Down by the Station)

Out in the garden early in the morning
See the red tomatoes all in a row
See the happy farmer coming out to pick them
Pick, pick, pick, pick
Off he goes.

Green beans
Purple cabbages
Yellow squash
Orange carrots

There's Something in My Garden
There’s something in my garden,
Now what can it be?
There’s something in my garden
That I can't really see.
Hear its funny sound….
Ribbit-Ribbit-Ribbit
A frog is what I found!
Ribbit-Ribbit-Ribbit

Mouse (squeak-squeak-squeak)
Bird (tweet-tweet-tweet)
Bumblebee (buzz-buzz-buzz)
Rabbit (thump-thump-thump)

Supercharged
What I did:  I explained that the Jo MacDonald book was based on the Old MacDonald had a Farm, so instead of reading it, we would be singing it!  I went through the actions for each before I read/sang the book and also pointed to E-I-E-I-O each time we got to it.

Parent Tip:  Singing is another good way to add new vocabulary.
