Movement

Boing! Boing! Squeak!

Boing! Boing! Squeak!
Boing! Boing! Squeak!
A bouncing mouse is in my house
He’s been here for a week.
He bounces in the kitchen, (lean to one side)
He bounces in the den, (lean to other side)
He bounces in the living room,
Look! There he goes again!
Boing! Boing! Squeak!
Boing! Boing! Squeak!
A bouncing mouse is in my house,
He’s been here for a week.

Parent Tip

Rhymes and poems are a great way to fill you child’s life with the rhythm and rhyme of language in a fun engaging, and silly way.  This rhyme lends itself nicely to bouncing along with the rhythm of the words.  Playing with words, rhythm and rhyme will help your child develop skills that will benefit them as they are learning to read.

Let’s do the rhyme one more time!  Feel free to bounce along with the mouse and the words!

Action Rhyme

Zoom Zoom Zoom

Zoom, zoom, zoom, we’re going to the moon!
Zoom, zoom, zoom, we’ll be there very soon!
So, if you’d like to take a trip
Just climb aboard my rocket ship
Zoom, zoom, zoom, we’re going to the moon!
In 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, Blastoff!

Elephants--Virtual Storytime

Flannel

Elephants in the Bathtub
One elephant in the bathtub
Going for a swim
Knock, knock (clap twice)
Splash, splash (slap knees 2x)
Come on in!

(count up from 1-5)

Five elephants in the bathtub
Going for a swim
Knick, knock
Splash, splash
They all fell in! (knock the felt pieces down)

Rhyme

The Elephant
An elephant has a great big trunk
That goes swinging to & fro
And he has tiny, tiny eyes,
That show him where to go.
His great big ears go flopping,
Flopping all around
While his great big feet go stomping,
STOMPING on the ground!

Book

A Parade of Elephants
by Kevin Henkes

Parent Tip

Storybooks are not the only option of reading material for young children.  You can pair a picture book with information books written for specially for preschoolers.  Reading informational books, such as Ella the Elephant can enlarge your child’s background knowledge.  Background knowledge is an important early literacy skill that is a foundation for future learning.

Fingerplay

Five Little Elephants

One little elephant went out to play
On a bright and sunny day
He had such E-NOR-MOUS fun
He called another elephant to come
EL-E-PHANT!

Continue adding elephants to five and end with:
They played and played til the day was done!

Songs/Rhymes/Flannel

At the Beach
(tune: Are You Sleeping?)
with props

Put your hat on, put your hat on
Sunscreen too, sunscreen too
Run down to the water, run down to the water
It’s cool and blue, cool and blue.

Get your buckets, get your shovels
Come let’s dig, come let’s dig
We will build a castle, we will build a castle
Tall and big, tall and big.

Throw a beach ball, catch a beach ball
With a friend, with a friend
Be careful as the wind blows, you never know where it will go
Down the beach, down the beach.

I Went to the Beach

I went to the beach and what did I see?  (make binoculars with hands)
A bird on the sand looking at me. (make beak—pointer finger and thumb)

I went to the beach and what did I see?  (make binoculars with hands)
A fish in the water splashing at me. (make fish with ONE hand)

I went to the beach and what did I see?  (make binoculars with hands)
A shell in the sand sparkling at me. (2 cupped hands, hinge open)

I went to the beach and what did I see?  (make binoculars with hands)
A crab in its shell waving at me (make hand into C shape and pinch)

Two red fish are swimming in the water
Bubble, bubble, bubble, bubble, SPLASH!
Three yellow fish are swimming in the water
Swimming in the water, swimming in the water
Three yellow fish are swimming in the water
