Time for Bed!

ABC Welcome

Flannel
Five in the Bed

There were 5 in the bed and the Red Ted said,
"I'm crowded! Roll over!"
So they all rolled over and _______ (color) fell out.

Counting until

There was 1 in the bed and the Red Ted said,
"I'm lonely"

There were 5 in the bed and the Red Ted said,
"Good Night!"

Book
Who Said Coo?
by Deborah Ruddell, illustrated by Robin Luebs
Published by Beach Lane Book, read with permission

Parent Tip
This book is full on rhyming words--coo, whoo, moo, Lulu, two and you. Reading books with rhyming words is a great way to develop phonological awareness--the ability to hear the smaller parts of words.  Research has shown that child who can rhyme have an easier time learning how to read.

Beach Day!

ABC Welcome

Movement
Let's pretend we are going to the beach!
Walk in parking lot.
I can walk on two feet, on two feet, on two feet
I can walk on two feet, all day long.
Rund when we get to the sand
I can run on two feet, on two feet, on two feet
I can walk on two feet, all day long.
Sand gets in your shoes!  Take them off!  Oh, but the sand is HOT!
I can hop on one foot, on one foot, on one foot
I can hop on one foot, all day long.
Get to the water and jump in!
I can jump on two feet, on two feet, on two feet
I can jump on two feet, all day long.

Song
At the Beach, At the Beach
(tune: Are you sleeping?)

Put your hat on, put your hat on
Sunscreen too, sunscreen too
Run down to the water, run down to the water
It's cool and blue, cool and blue.

Get your buckets, get your shovels
Come let's dig, come let's dis
We will build a castle, we will build a castle
Tall and big, tall and big.

Throw a beach ball, catch a beach ball
With a friend, with a friend
Be careful as the wind blows, you never know where it will go
Down the beach, down the beach.

Book

Monkey Ono
by J.C. Phillipps
published by Viking, read with permission

Parent Tip
Monkey Ono wrote and drew about the plans he made.  Parents, when your child sees you write you are teaching print awareness, an understanding that print has meaning.  Show your child what you are writing and read what it says.  Together you could make a list of things you will do.  This encourages your child to begin to explore putting pencil or crayong to paper--one of the first steps to writing!

Flannel
Three Little Sandcastles

We are 3 little sandcastles sitting on the beach
Watching the boats go by
3 little sandcastles sitting on the beach
Watching the seagulls fly
3 little sandcastles sitting on the beach
Watching the clouds so high
When along came a wave and washed one away
And this is what the other ones said...

Continue with two and one

End: And now they've got nothing to say.

Animal Goodbyes

Lambs and calves
Joeys, ducklings, lamb and calves
I love baby animals!

(cubs--bear, lion, tiger)
(calves--cow, elephant, walrus)

Parent Tip
Having a rich vocabulary will help your child become a life-long learner.  Vocabulary is developed when adultes share words with children in context and talk about words--as we did with baby animal names.  The more words we introduce and talk about with our children the more prepared they will be to read.
