Pig Storytime

School is back in session and so my "all ages" storytime is children 5 and under.  I love having older children there--but it's hard to balance what books, songs, and activities will engage such a wide span of ages.

One more week of farm animals...this week?  PIGS!!

Henrietta Raccoon has been bringing something to show the children...and it's hidden in my apron pocket.  For pig storytime she brought something pigs love...MUD!  (At least she put it in a ziploc bag before putting it in my pocket!)

Books

Piglet and Granny by Margaret Wild; illustrated by Stephen Michael King

How Big is a Pig?  by Clare Beaton

Songs/Rhymes/Flannelboard

Five Dirty Pigs
5 dirty pigs playing in the mud
Oh, my! They need a scrub!
The farmer took one piggy out
"Oink, oink, oink!" the pig did shout!

Continue down to zero dirty pigs and 5 clean pigs

The farmer turned his back..and then
5 little pigs were dirty again!

We count the number of clean pigs and the number of dirty pigs.  An easy way to add a math element to storytime!

Nursery Rhyme
To market, to market, to buy a fat pig,
Home again, home again, jiggety-jig;
To market, to market, to buy a fat hog,
Home again, home again, jiggety-jog.

P-I-G-G-Y
There was a hungry little hog
And Piggy was her name-o
P-I-G-G-Y
P-I-G-G-Y
P-I-G-G-Y
And Piggy was her name-o!

There was a hungry little hog
And Piggy was her name-o
P-I-G-G-(clap)
P-I-G-G-(clap)
P-I-G-G-(clap)
And Piggy was her name-o!

Continue taking away a letter and adding a clap.  See my "Bingo" explanation  here.
