V and X are for...

OK...now I am running out of time to finish up the alphabet before storytime ends.  But to tell the truth I'm glad I had an excuse to combine two difficult letters!  I do not try to do "xylophone" for x because it doesn't make the /x/ sound, so instead I use words with the x sound--exit, box, fox.

Books

Little Fox in a Box

Little fox, little fox come out and play
What color box are you in today?

The Soup is Boiling Up!
(sung to: The Farmer in the Dell)

The soup is boiling up,
The soup is boiling up,
Stir slow, around we go
The soup is boiling up!

First we add the ___________
First we add the ___________
Stir slow, around we go,
The soup is boiling up!
I use a variety of vegetable cut outs that the children add to the big Halloween cauldron--and I stir with a long wooden spoon.  Vegetables include:  carrots, tomatoes, potatoes, peppers, onion, beans, and peas.  Often several children get the same kind of vegetable.  Make sure to let the kids "taste" the soup when it is done!

Little Bo Peep
Little Bo Peep has lost her sheep
And doesn't know where to find them.
Leave them alone and they'll come home
Wagging their tails behind them.

S is for Spring!

Again I stray from our "letter a week" storytime, but I have a workshop to go to on Thursday and our practicum student will do a storytime she developed on Thursday...so I thought with it being the first day of spring we should celebrate!

JST4U--Let's Make Stuff!

March is National Craft Month--so what better way to celebrate than to MAKE STUFF!!  The library invited students in 5th - 8th grades to visit the library to make a variety of crafts...even an edible craft!  And to watch "Wreck It Ralph".

Here are the crafts we did:

"Shrinky Dinks" using recycled number 6 plastic from deli/bakery boxes. A couple of the girls turned theirs  into necklaces.

Locker Magnets using scrapbook paper, stickers, manga

Manga bookmarks

Springtime Flower

The girls that were there had a great time and made lots of crafts.   But we had a very low turn out.  Gordon  and I know there is a need for youth activities focusing on this age group, but we are just not sure what else we can do to get the 5th-8th graders to the programs!

We are planning a summer JST4U event.  Summer events tend to draw more kids.  The plan to make it work out better?

  1. Plan activities earlier so we can be more specific when we advertise our event.
  2. Talk it up a lot when we visit the schools before summer reading.
  3. Combine FOOD and fun.  (I still believe in the saying..."If you feed them they will come.")
Hopefully we can get a good turn out for the June event!

"Little Red Riding Hood" Puppet Show

We were so pleased to have the Urban Prairie Puppet Company present a puppet show using the Bellevue Public Library's marionette collection.  Children and families enjoyed:  "Little Red Riding Hood"!

As children gathered for the puppet show I brought out hand puppets for them to play with...

And now it's show time!

Wolf (x2), Red, Grandma, Woodcutter

This show hasn't been performed since 1987!!  I loved the adaptations the creators made...the wolf was after Little Red Riding Hood's chocolate chip cookies!  When Red wanted to take all the cookies to Grandma Wolf hurries to Grandma's house so he can get the cookies.  He asks Grandma to get in the closet and when he asks "please" she does.  When Red comments "What big teeth you have!" the Wolf replies, "The better to eat chocolate chip cookies with!"  When the woodcutter comes he offers Wolf graham crackers and fruit--which the wolf ends up liking!

We had an awesome turn out.  We'd like to thank our wonderful donor for hosting this puppet show for the children at the Bellevue Public Library!!

U is for...

Although the other vowels seemed to prove challenging, the letter U is fun to do for storytime thanks to TWO wonderful U words:  umbrella and underwear!!

Books

Froggy Gets Dressed by Jonathan London
I love this story.  It gives children the opportunity to participate and they love when when we get to unexpected underwear part!

Silly Sally by Audrey Wood
Another one of my favorite books with a subtle "u" connection--upside down.

Animals Underground
By Lucia Kemp Henry

Here is the mole that lives underground.  Close eyes and put hands under your chin.
Here are the ants in their underground town.  Use fingers to scurry on the back of the other hand.
Here is a mouse in her warm little den.  Wrap arms around torso.
Here are the worms and there are ten.  Hold up hands and wiggle ten fingers.
Here is the turtle where he likes to hide.  Make a fist (turtle’s shell) and wiggle thumb (turtle’s head).
Here are the toads sitting side by side.  Place two closed fists side by side.
All of these creatures live underground.  Point to the ground.
Look very closely or they’ll never be found!  Make binoculars with hands and place them in front of your eyes

The Bean Bag Song
(sung to: There's a spider on the floor)

There's a bean bag on my hair, on my hair
There's a bean bag on my hair, on my hair
There's a bean bag on my hair, now leave it right up there
There's a bean bag on my hair, on my hair.

There's a bean bag on the ground, on the ground
There's a bean bag on the ground, on the ground
There's a bean bag on the ground, now step and step around
There's a bean bag on the ground, on the ground.

There's a bean bag on my toe, on my toe
There's a bean bag on my toe, on my toe
There's a bean bag on my toe, lift it high and lift it low
There's a bean bag on my toe, on my toe.

There's a bean bag on my hand, on my hand
There's a bean bag on my hand, on my hand
There's a bean bag on my hand, toss it up and watch it land
There's a bean bag on my hand, on my hand.

Little Boy Blue

Little Boy Blue come blow your horn
The sheep's in the meadow, the cow's in the corn
Where is the boy who looks after the sheep?
He's under the haystack, fast asleep.

Enrichment Activities
What is under the umbrella?
A simple umbrella cut out and the top is taped onto a page that says, "What is under the umbrella?"  The child colors the umbrella and draws something hiding under the umbrella.

Up!
Can you keep the balloon up in the air?  I had six balloons blown up that the children could try to keep up in the air.  This is one of the children's favorite activities.

Go Together Flashcards
These were just some simple flashcards from the Dollar Store of things that go together.

DIY Table: Spring Brings Fun!

March 20th is an exciting day...spring will official be here!  However, one never knows what that means in Nebraska!  So our survey question this month has several "weather related" questions:
  • Will there be snow on the ground on Easter, March 31st?
  • What will the temperature be on the first day of spring?
  • How many tornado warnings will we have in March?
But to be more optimistic for a wonderful spring children will have several activities to do at the Do It Yourself Table this month!

  • Make a spring flower
  • Solve a few spring Sudoku puzzles
  • Do the scavenger hunt to solve the riddle about spring
  • Springtime Maze and Find the Differences Sheet
As always, make sure you fill out a drawing slip each time you participate for a chance to win a springtime prize!!
