In 2004 Children's Librarian, Alice Boeckman, conceived the idea of having a reading marathon in conjunction with Read Across America Day and Dr. Seuss' birthday, March 2nd. Her goal was to have someone reading a Dr. Seuss book the entire time the library was open--twelve hours straight!
Over the years the format of Seuss-athon has made a few minor changes. But the popularity and growth of this annual program has grown each year! We are looking forward to a busy and fun 10th anniversary of Seuss-athon.
Saturday, March 2, from 9 AM to 5 PM
You may be asking yourself, "What is Seuss-athon?"
Seuss-athon is a reading marathon held yearly at the Bellevue Public Library on (or near) Dr. Seuss' birthday, March 2. It is a time to celebrate the wonderful contributions Dr. Seuss made to children's literature. Families, teens, and individuals are invited to come to the library anytime during the day to read Dr. Seuss books. You can come for a few minutes or an hour--it's up to you!
But this is not some ordinary event! The large meeting room is transformed!! Comfy couches and recliners are loaned to us from Ace Rent-to-Own; several local businesses donate snacks and beverages to enjoy while you read; and each person who comes gets their name in a drawing for a door prize! Each child leaves with a small Dr. Seuss and a certificate!
Here are pictures from our past Seuss-athons to get you excited for the big day!!
